HOUSE SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT

Women Build - For the 6th year, Habitat for Humanity, area business and organizations have formed a Women Build partnership to construct a safe, decent and affordable Habitat home. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Monday, February 1, 2010 on Teach Street in Hampton.

As a house sponsor, WVBT FOX 43 will spotlight Habitat for Humanity with a variety of coverage which includes tracking construction progress during the Fox 43 Late News at 10 p.m. Other house sponsors for the Women Build partnership include BB&T, BayPort Credit Union, Eaton Marina Power & Lighting, Habitat ReStore, Home Paramount Pest Control, Junior League of Hampton Roads, Langley Federal Credit Union Lowe’s, St Kateri Catholic Church, Starbucks, Visions2000, Wachovia and York River Electric.

Women Build is not about excluding men, but including more women in the construction process. Through the house sponsors, women and men from diverse backgrounds have signed on to pick up hammers and power tools to help the Brooks family build their way to a better future

The homeowner-to-be is Pearlean Brooks, who will purchase the home for herself, her daughter Mariah and Mariah’s newborn son, Armond. Pearlean has worked for the past several years with Aramark Dining Services in Williamsburg. She has an income between 30-60% of the area median income, excellent credit and is completing her required 400 hours of sweat equity. Pearlean will buy the house from Habitat and pay a monthly, no-interest mortgage for the next 30 years.

Northrop Grumman - Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding, along with the United Steelworkers (Local 8888), has begun work on an 8th house for Habitat. The house is located on Short Street in Newport News. Current and retired employees from all levels of Northrop Grumman are involved in the entire build process from design to delivery. As a house sponsor, Northrop Grumman also provides the financial support and coordination for this project. Northrop Grumman is truly defining the future, one house at a time.

The homeowner for this house will be Celestine Clarke, who will live in the house with her granddaughter. Celestine has worked nearly 20 years with the Newport News Public Schools system and, like Pearlean, she has qualified to purchase her new house from Habitat based on her income and excellent credit history.

Thrivent Builds
- Thrivent Builds is a financial, volunteer and advocacy partnership between Thrivent Financial for Lutherans® and Habitat for Humanity® International. The multi-year, multi-million dollar partnership includes sponsorship of hundreds of Habitat houses nationwide, including a 4th house sponsored right here in the local community.

The house will be located on Booker Street in Hampton and the first-time homebuyer will be Ebony Peterson. Ebony has two daughters and is an employee of Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding.

25th Anniversary - Habitat for Humanity Peninsula is celebrating 25 years of service to Hampton, James City County, Newport News, Williamsburg and York County. In honor of this celebration, Habitat is sponsoring our 25th Anniversary house. Community volunteers, military, civic and faith groups are providing the labor for this house on Oak Avenue in Newport News.

The homeowner-to-be is Glenda Knighton who will reside in the house with her daughter Oleta. Glenda is a longtime employee of historic Fort Monroe's Child Development Center. Glenda is a Hampton resident, anxiously awaiting the opportunity to purchase her first home.
