VOLUNTEER INFO

Thank you for your interest in volunteering to work with Habitat for Humanity Peninsula!  We work hard to eliminate substandard housing on the Peninsula and to build homes for hardworking families.  We can only provide safe, decent, affordable houses to our families with the help of volunteers like you.  We hope you find working with Habitat for Humanity both fun and rewarding!

For more information about how you can help Habitat for Humanity, please visit our How You Can Help page.

Below, you can find information concerning volunteer opportunities for construction, Habitat ReStore and the Habitat office.

EVERYONE MUST SUBMIT A LIABILITY WAIVER BEFORE VOLUNTEERING!

To sum it up, you won't hold Habitat for Humanity liable if you hurt yourself while building a house. We DO train you, but accidents sometimes (though rarely) happen when construction is underway! Also, you give us permission to use photos from your build day for marketing purposes, if necessary. Finally, we do not tolerate sexual harassment and ask that you report it immediately. That's it!!

You can download the liability waiver here.  Please be sure to get your completed liability waiver to the Habitat office at P.O. Box 1443, Newport News, VA 23601 prior to your first day of volunteering.  If unable to mail, please fax to 757-591-0455. Or you can physically drop the waiver by our offices at 809 Main Street, Ste 105 in Newport News. Please DO NOT wait and bring the waiver to the construction site. We have learned the hard way that our construction team is so good at what they do, they don't have time to keep track of all those pieces of paper!

Construction VOLUNTEERS

The ENTIRE volunteer scheduling process is web-based, making it more efficient for volunteers.

VOLUNTEER DATABASE! Groups and individuals, if you are interested in construction, please sign up using our our Volunteer Database so we may include you (or your group) in our emailed alerts for construction volunteer scheduling. Inside the "Volunteer Alert" email, there will be a link to our volunteer scheduler, as well as scheduling location(s), dates and answers to frequently asked volunteer questions. VolunteerHub

Interested Businesses/Organizations/Churches - Click here to sign up at our Volunteer Database.

Interested Individuals (and groups of friends) - Click here to sign up at our Volunteer Database.

You can choose to visit the VolunteerHub at anytime; however, if you are not signed up to receive "Volunteer Alert" emails, you will not be notified when scheduling begins each time.

If you've signed up for the volunteer database, we will email you as volunteer opportunities arise.  If you haven't heard from Habitat for Humanity, it's because there are no opportunities at that specific time or because your email server bounced our Volunteer Alert back to us.  Please add Habitat to your "safe" email list to prevent this.

WORK SITE GUIDELINES!
We take our job - and your job - seriously.  Be sure that you:

Know volunteers must be at least 16 years old to be on the construction site.

Download and read Habitat for Humanity's site safety plan.

Remember a maximum of 10 construction volunteers are allowed on the site at any one time.

Are dressed appropriately for the weather, your own safety and health.  Gloves or heavy shoes or boots are perfect.  No open-toed shoes allowed.

Bring water (not soda) on hot days.

Complete and sign a waiver of liability form.

The Construction Supervisor will give you details about the specific tasks of the day.  We will try to make good use of your time.  We want you to have a good volunteer experience with us.  Wear a nametag and introduce yourself to other volunteers.  You may meet a homeowner family, since family members work on their own and other Habitat Homes.  If possible, please bring basic hand tools (hammer 16oz or heavier, tape measure, utility knife, etc.)  Please clearly label your tools!

LUNCH! If you don't want to break a sweat hammering nails or hanging shingles, consider providing lunch for the volunteers that do. Our construction teams welcome a refreshing lunch break!  Contact Deputy Director LaToya C. Parker at 757-596-5553 x5 or info@helphabitatforhumanity.org if you would like to provide lunch.

WE NEED LAND! Volunteers are also needed to help seek out land!  There are many ways to build a Habitat home, but we can't begin to build without land.  A lack of land continues to be our biggest obstacle to reaching our goal of building more safe, decent, affordable homes.  You can help!  If you see or know of ANY land that is for sale, please visit our Land Info Database to provide the location and any other information you can think of.  We'll take it from there!  We have cash & tax credits/deductions available.  Without land, we cannot build!

ReStore VOLUNTEERS

The ReStore is our Building Materials Warehouse, which accepts donations of new and gently used building materials.  Please visit our ReStore web pages for more information about hours, donations, and staff.  The ReStore is open to the public and we sell all items at greatly reduced prices, usually from 50-90% below retail.  100% of the profits from the ReStore are used to build more homes in our communities.

With so many great donations coming in, we really need volunteers!  The ReStore needs volunteers Tuesday – Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Volunteers in the ReStore handle a variety of duties, including Customer Service, Driver Pick-up and Warehouse Inventory/Pricing. If you are interested in volunteering at the ReStore, please call the ReStore directly at 757-246-4955, and the ReStore is located at 9614 Warwick Boulevard (in the Hilton Shopping Center) in Newport News.

OfficE VOLUNTEERS

We don't currently have any office volunteer opportunities at this time.

Our Habitat offices are open Monday – Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and we can usually use help with volunteers who will make a 4-hour commitment at least once a week. Duties include answering phones, filing, copying and soliciting donations.  Our office is located at 809 Main Street in Newport News.

We rely on volunteers to make the building process possible.
Again, thank you for your interest in Habitat for Humanity Peninsula.
